You know who I want~
The darkness that's been lingering in his soul seems to claw at him from the inside, grabbing him with sharp talons until all he could do was begin to drown in it. It made him want to claw at himself, tug his hair out of its roots as long as the pain is able to distract him from the monster lurking inside of him.
His breath hitches as he stumbles into the dark corridor, the night seemingly longer ever since they've arrived in Heartland. The night chills sends goose bumps rising on his arms, and he held back a choked sob as he quietly made his way to where Yuto's room is. Everyone has their own room, all of them tired and seemingly worn out from the endless duels that keep coming their way. But it's in this world that Yuya can feel the darkness pressing down on him, stronger than it was back in Standard and Synchro.
He reaches Yuto's door, fingers curling slightly as he gently rapped his knuckles against the door.]
...Yuto?
no subject
That's why he has to focus and make the best strategy he can.
His thoughts are suddenly interrupted when he hears knocking on the door. His first thought is "Shun", but then he can't imagine that his best friend would knock and wait for him to open the door. So if it's not Shun, then who?
Yuto makes his way towards the door and opens it. His eyes widen slightly.]
Yuya?
[His counterpart looks... so strange. Like he's afraid of something. Yuto opens the door wider and gestures for Yuya to come in.]
Did something happen?
[Something is very wrong, but right now Yuto can't exactly tell what. It feels like something is squeezing his own heart. Is it worry? Or...]
no subject
Even now, here in Heartland, both Yuto and Shun seems to be filled with a stronger motivation now that it's hard to see both of them trying to get any decent sleep.
Yuya, though, is more surprised Yuto has opened his door at all. It's enough to catch him off guard, never thinking about the possibility that Yuto would open the door, even more for the other to gesture him inside.
Reflexively, a smile comes onto his face.]
Sorry, was I bothering you? [He tries not to let the fear creep into his voice even as he steps into Yuto's room.
After all, it's not very often he'd get the chance.]
no subject
Still he doesn't see the reason why Yuya would be surprised to see him open the door. The smile on his counterpart's face isn't helping at all either.
At the question, Yuto looks at his deck, then approaches it and puts it away.]
No.
[He looks at Yuya, studying him for a moment. His gaze is stern, but there is concern in it as well.]
So what happened?
no subject
Running into Edo was just an unwanted interference, something that's triggered something in Yuya that he wants to ignore.
Yuya isn't so oblivious, though, to see Yuto put his deck away. So he's been up strategizing again.
The smile turns sheepish, slightly crooked.]
Nothing happened! [Lies; they're still connected, after all.
Yuya rubs the back of his head.] Guess I uh...just wanted to talk, but I can leave. [This...feels awkward. Maybe he shouldn't have come here, after all.]
no subject
Something happened. [There's no doubt in his voice as he says that. He walks up closer to Yuya, his grey eyes are fixed on the other as if trying to find the answers for his questions in his counterpart's expression.]
If you wanted to talk, then let's talk.
[But his gaze softens, showing worry. If Yuya doesn't want to tell him, then he won't pry it out of him. But there's one thing he wants his counterpart to know.]
...You know you can tell me everything, right? [He'll always listen.]
no subject
His eyes lower to the floor in thought before he looks back at Yuto, his smile a little more genuine this time.]
I know I can.
[He can and it's because he trusts Yuto that he finally says:]
Lately, I've just been feeling like there's this...darkness trying to control me. [His expression changes, the fear evident once more.] Almost as if there's this monster inside of me that keeps trying to claw its way out and the more I duel, the more I see so many innocent people get turned into cards--
[He trails off, hand reaching up to grab his own shirt over his heart. Yuya can still feel it now, the way that darkness is still trying to take over him.]
I'm afraid that I won't be myself by the time the war is over.
[It's said quietly, almost as if acknowledging that means it'll truly happen. But then he smiles at Yuto again.] That sounds kind of silly, though, doesn't it?
no subject
He closes his eyes.]
It doesn't.
[He looks at Yuya again, grabbing his counterpart's hand in his own and giving it a firm squeeze. His expression is serious and determined.]
It doesn't sound silly, but you don't have to be afraid. I won't allow anything like that to happen to you.
[If he'll fall into darkness, Yuto will bring him back, just like Yuya brought him back during that duel with Yugo. It's simple to him and Yuto doesn't even consider that he may be powerless against the monster that dwells within Yuya's soul.
He wants to protect Yuya and he will do it no matter what. That's all.]
no subject
And then towards him.
He looks at Yuto when his counterpart he grabs his hand, squeezing it. It makes him feel warm inside, drawing a soft laugh out of him.]
Like a knight, right?
[Yuto's always been so selfless in that regard, but also so reckless that Yuya sometimes follow in his steps. In a way, it makes sense, he guesses.
But Yuya smiles at him, squeezing Yuto's hand.]
But I don't want anything happening to you either, Yuto. [Yuto's already lost too many people, Yuya's lost those dear to him. How would either of them fare if something happens to the other?]
no subject
Or maybe Yuto really is acting like a knight, even though he's not fully aware of it. But it doesn't matter. He wants Yuya to know that he's safe because Yuto will protect him.
He smiles a little when he hears that other part and when his counterpart squeezes his hand back. Of course they don't want to lose each other. They're like two pieces of one whole and frankly, Yuto can't imagine what he would do if Yuya suddenly disappeared from his life. He's grown so used to having the other around.]
I know. I'll be careful.
[He pauses, his smile becoming warmer.]
So don't worry about anything, okay?
no subject
The knight title really does suit Yuto well, even if his counterpart hasn't seemed to realize it. Through everything they've been through, Yuya has always felt around Yuto. Maybe it's because they're counterparts or by something else, but not once has Yuya ever felt afraid of Yuto.
So, hearing his promise to protect him, it makes Yuya happy.]
You better be careful or I'll have to end up saving the knight.
[He's teasing and grinning. It's nice to see Yuto smile, so he makes sure to keep it in his memories.]
Easier said than done.
no subject
[He knows that if anything happened to him Yuya would be able to save him, but... For now he wants to be the protector. Besides, he would hate if Yuya got hurt in any way.
He still holds his counterpart's hand in his own, but he doesn't even realize it, like doing this is the most natural thing in the world.]
...If you worry this much you can always stay here for the night. [Hopefully some company will be enough to comfort Yuya. And Yuto can watch over him, too.
There's only one old bed in here, but Yuto doesn't mind sleeping on the floor.]
no subject
[Yuya's all for Yuto being the protector, but Yuya....Yuya doesn't feel right having someone else risk their life on the line for him.
A step closer so he could bump their foreheads together. It's scary how natural it is to be like this with Yuto. Yuya's never really done anything like this before, not even to Yuzu, so it's new but comforting and perfectly natural.
But at the suggestion, Yuya pulls back, eyes wide with surprise as he looks at Yuto.]
Are you sure? I've already bothered-- [He cuts himself off, eyes peering around Yuto and on the bed.] ...Then is it alright if you sleep with me, too?
no subject
When Yuya pulls back, Yuto squeezes his hand one more in some feeble attempt to stop him.
And it seems they both just keep on surprising each other, because Yuto didn't expect Yuya to ask him that. Yuto looks at the bed, then at his counterpart. He doesn't mind sharing the bed, but...]
...It's fine, but are you sure about that? [He pauses.] I can just sleep on the floor.
no subject
He's not going to go anywhere, and it's almost funny how their roles seemed a little reversed but that's okay. Yuya doesn't want to separate from Yuto, especially not after what they've been through, but it feels like it'll take a lot just for anyone to keep them completely apart.
It has him leaning again, just to hoop their noses together.
Leaning back, Yuya grins.]
It's big enough to hold both of us, right? It'll be completely fine.
[Yuya just wants to remain close to Yuto.]
no subject
And he gives his counterpart a soft smile.]
Alright.
[With that said he leans away a little and lightly pulls the other towards bed.
All of this feels so strangely natural for him to do, but for now he thinks of it as a result of their connection more than anything else. But he's glad. He's glad that he can do something to drive Yuya's fears away.]
no subject
So he follows Yuto to the bed, squeezsing his hand a bit in gratitude.
Thank you.
Yuya's sure he doesn't need to speak it aloud in words. In fact, on some level, he's sure that he doesn't need to say it at all, but being with Yuto helps. Their closeness felt so natural, as if they've always been two pieces of a whole. Not quite like twins, but something similar.
Whatever the reason, it has Yuya practically tackle Yuto down onto the bed when they're close enough, arms wrapped around his counterpart.]
no subject
But the tackle hug is again unexpected. Yuto lets a small gasp when Yuya lands on top of him. For some odd reason his heart starts beating faster, but he ignores it. Yuto is happy, he's so happy to be this close and without thinking another moment of it he wraps his arms around Yuya.
It feels like he's just gotten everything he's ever wanted in life, like feeling Yuya's warmth against him makes him feel whole and complete.
At the very same time he thinks to himself that he'd love to stay like this forever. Is he being weird for thinking that? Is it a selfish wish? It definitely is.
So he lets himself enjoy this moment for as long as he can.]
no subject
When dawn breaks through and morning comes once more, this happy moment won't be able to last for much longer. Reality will hit them again, reminding them that there's still a war to be had, people to save.
Relieved that Yuto hasn't pushed him off, Yuya rests his head on his counterpart's chest, ear pressed against it in order to listen to his heartbeat. The steady rhythm is enough to have Yuya's eyes slip shut, his body relaxing for the first time since tonight.
For now, he'll bask in this warmth, enjoy it for however long he can. For now, he'll allow himself to be selfish before they have to wake up and start a new day.]
no subject
He doesn't want to think of what will happened tomorrow, but he is definitely not going to leave Yuya all alone unless it's absolutely necessary.
But that's tomorrow.
He reaches up to gently brush Yuya's hair with his fingers and lets himself close his eyes.]
no subject
That combined with the steady beat of Yuto's heart, it's enough to lull Yuya into a slumber. For once, it's a sleep without any worries, without having to keep himself alert at all times as the stress from his fears and worries finally begin to ebb away.
Dawn will come and with it, a new day, but for tonight, Yuya will allow himself to be able to sleep in his counterpart's arms.
He curls up against Yuto, hold tightening just the slightest as if assuring himself that his counterpart suddenly won't disappear from him.]
no subject
There are no nightmares haunting him tonight. He doesn't awake until the very morning either.
It's so strange. He doesn't remember when was the last time he slept so well and for so long. Blinking the sleepiness away, Yuto looks down to see Yuya still in his arms.
So it wasn't a dream.
That makes Yuto smile a little.
It's morning. They should go now. This world is still at war and so much has to be done. And even though Yuto knows that he doesn't have a heart to wake Yuya up. On top of that, he really wants to stay like this just a moment longer.]
no subject
It's been one of the first nights he's been able to sleep fitfully, but his body is beginning to wake, slowly coming to terms with the waking world again.
He wakes up, though he doesn't move just yet. A quick glance around the room has him wondering where he is before he becomes aware of the warm body just below him. Slightly startled, Yuya looks at the person whose arms he's in, realizing that it's Yuto.
It has him relaxing significantly, greeting his counterpart with a grin.]
Morning.
no subject
I hope you slept well...
[The simile disappears from his face as Yuto's gaze shifts to the ceiling.]
Because we have a lot to do today. [Just like everyday anyway. He loosens his embrace around Yuya to let him stand up if he wants to.]
no subject
He gets off of Yuto, quickly getting off the bed and he looks over at his counterpart.]
I didn't squish you, did I?
[He's a little surprised Yuto hasn't even moved him at all. Yuya's sure he could've been heavy, and sleeping on Yuto all night might've been uncomfortable for his counterpart.]
