[Sometimes all it takes is just one wrong move, one slip. This is exactly what happened to Aether. As he and Gorou were climbing up the mountain, the traveler put his foot on the wrong rock, which gave away easily. Thankfully, he didn't fall all the way down, but he grazed his foot pretty badly against the sharp rocks below. Once the boy manages to climb all the way up to his companion, it's difficult for him to not wince in pain, especially when his foot touches anything.]
I-I... I'm fine.
[And yet he still wants to insist it's just a minor inconvenience. He's been hurt much more before, so why would this stop him from anything?]
Just give me a moment, okay?
[He tries to force a smile, before he shifts to actually check on his hurting foot. He winces yet again when he spots blood. This really is not his day, it seems.]
[ Everyone has their own story—Noé always knew that, but he didn't expect Aether's past to be so turbulent. From what he's witnessed, the traveler is always kind and willing to help others. As he listens to the story, Noé realizes that even if it seemed that Aether had already exhausted most of the possibilities of finding Lumine, he can sense how determined and hopeful the traveler is. The vampire admitted to having a rather peculiar skill right away.
Reading other people's memories through drinking their blood. That ability has brought Noé a lot of pain in the past, but as long as it can be beneficial to some, he won't hesitate to use it. After explaining how it works, he asks softly: ]
Would you like to try it? We can do it right away. But if you don't want me to see anything, that's fine. I just thought I might help...
[Noé accompanied him long enough for Aether to know that the vampire means well. Still, when the other explains that he can see memories by drinking that person's blood, the traveler can't hide the shadow of fear that runs through him. Again, he reminds himself that Noé only wants to help. He's always been so kind.
Aether takes a deep breath, then frowning, takes hold of the other's hand. It's a small gesture, one that he hopes will show that he really appreciates the thought.]
In all honesty... I'm not really sure what you're going to see there.
[He isn't hiding that this is a difficult decision for him to make, but if it could help him get a clue on how to find Lumine...]
We... could do it, but... can you promise me that you won't tell anyone else what you saw?
[ The gesture surprises Noé, but it's very much appreciated. Actually, in order to express his gratitude, he squeezes Aether's hand. ]
I promise!
[ He sounds a bit too eager; to be honest Noé has been thinking about how Aether's blood might taste like. Still, he realizes that this isn't the time nor the place to be thinking about such things. ]
No one will ever know. And if you don't think that you're ready, we can give it some more time.
[ He pauses for a moment, his smile becoming somewhat melancholic. ]
It's not a nice thing to have someone read your memories, I suppose.
[He squeezes Noé's hands back, enjoying the contact. Even if he has his doubts about showing someone his past, Aether still cares about the other a lot.]
It's... difficult. [He admits.] But it's mostly because I'm just not sure what you're going to say once you see everything.
[He trusts Noé, but it doesn't feel right to put anything more on his shoulders. It's enough that the other wishes to help the traveler find his sister. Seeing visions of dying world and hundreds of years of lonely journey is nothing Aether wishes to share.
And yet-]
But if this stays between us, then... I'm ready.
[He guesses the reason Noé is so eager is because he wants to know more about him.]
[ Seeing Aether fall down gives Gorou a stroke of panic, and he immediately stops in place and attempts to skid down a little in an attempt to catch Aether before he eats it completely. Although it seems like Aether saved himself from a very nasty fall, Gorou's still panicking even as his comrade manages to climb up towards him.
Gorou finds his footing and kneels to look at Aether's foot. It...mm. It doesn't look great. He frowns and his ears droop before he reaches into his bag for some bandages. ]
I'll give you several moments, actually. Can you sit? Let me patch this up for you.
[ The sight of blood isn't new to him, obviously, but it hurts doubly so since it's on Aether. ]
[ Noé, blissfully unaware of Aether's circumstances, hopes that the key to finding Lumine is hidden somewhere in the traveler's memories. He's used this power a couple of times and knows that there are both happy and sad moments in everyone's life. Still, he could never imagine the events he's about to see. ]
There's one more thing... [ It's silly that he's forgotten to ask about this, but that's not the reason behind the bright blush spreading across his cheeks.. ] Where should I...?
[ It's such a weird thing to ask; he can't even finish the sentence at first. ]
[Maybe there really is a chance, maybe Noé will see something in Aether's memories that the traveler himself overlooked. Maybe it's really worth a shot, even if a part of him still feels bad considering everything the other will have to see.
But that thought is quickly forgotten when Noé asks him that question. Aether's eyes widen for a moment, then his own face blooms bright red as he averts his gaze.]
Ah... um... w-well... the neck, I guess...? [Isn't that the place where vampire usually bite people in the stories? Aether isn't sure if fiction has anything to do with reality, but the idea of having the other's mouth against his neck is making him blush harder.
Then his brain reminds him that it'll be a real bite, that he'll lose blood. It will surely hurt and getting bitten on the neck may actually be a horrible idea. But what else is he supposed to answer?]
A-actually... Maybe that's not a good place! J-just pick anywhere you think would be fine...!
[ Honestly, seeing Aether hesitate doesn't surprise nor offend Noé; the offer he's made is an unusual one, so talking about the details such as biting spot. His blush, however, makes something warm bubble in the vampire's chest. If this is how he feels now, then what is going to happen when he tries Aether's blood?
Noé shakes his head to regain his composure; getting distracted now would be no good. ]
Some people enjoy getting bitten in their necks, but it's a little painful at first.
[ That information is a little irrelevant since it seems that Aether came to a similar conclusion—at least regarding the part about the pain. ]
Maybe your wrist would be better? It shouldn't hurt as much, I'll try to be delicate, too.
[Aether blinks, then stares down at his wrist. His face is just as warm as before as his thoughts go wild in his head. He honestly needs to pull himself together or else Noé will think that he's acting weird. The traveler takes a deep breath, then nods, slipping his glove off, before moving closer to the other and offering his hand.]
I trust you.
[He speaks those words slowly, sincere and looking right at the other. Aether's cheeks are still very much red, though. He's nervous, but he's not sure why exactly. He's not afraid of pain - he's been hurt so many times before. It's the closeness that's so unfamiliar to him.
Physical closeness, but also the fact that someone will see the truth about him.]
[Aether feels bad for making Gorou worry like that. After all, they were supposed to have fun time climbing the mountain, but the traveler can't heal his leg in an instant or anything like that. Sighing a little at the wound, he finally nods and sit down, then carefully takes off his shoe.
It takes him a moment, the injury hurting more at the movement.]
I... think I'll have to be more careful from now on.
[The blood drips freely from now bare foot. It doesn't look like Aether will be able to walk properly for some time.]
[ Noé grips his hand as gently as possible, his eyes turning golden as soon as he feels the pulse under his fingers. As much as he'd like to gaze up to reassure Aether that everything will be alright and that it will remain their secret.
First of all, he doesn't want to freak Aether out— perhaps it's just in his head, but there's very little he can do about it, considering his previous experiences. A few moments later, his fangs sink into the tissue, and he makes a soft sound when he can taste the first drop of blood.
Eventually, everything becomes blurry and when he comes to, Noé can see Aether's back, but he doesn't recognize the place they're in. ]
[The nervousness that Aether feels might be something to be expected. He's facing something new, he doesn't know how it'll go... but Noé's hold over his hand is careful. It's enough to ease some of the traveler's worries. Aether closes his eyes, then winces, a soft gasp leaving his lips, when fangs pierce his skin. It hurts, but it's okay. He just needs to get used to this...
...Meanwhile, what Noé will see in the realm of memories is Aether joined by his twin sister. They truly look alike - both blond, both shining bright like stars on the night sky. They both look worried, Lumine griping Aether's hand.
A few moments later they're joined by someone. A person who has always been kind to them.]
This world is lost, but I'm sure that the two of you will be able to find a "home" out there.
[Explosions and chaos suddenly ring outside, but the person in front of them continues to smile kindly. The twins don't look convinced at first, but they both realize they have no other choice.
The next thing they know, they are flying towards the stars, golden wings on their back. They travel to many worlds and places and none of them is their "home". Each time they have to flee, over and over again, for hundreds of years.]
This terrain isn't exactly the easiest...but accidents happen.
[ He doesn't want to tell Aether to turn back, and he won't unless he knows it's going to be too hard for them. Telling Aether to go back feels disrespectful to the other boy's capabilities, but that wound isn't pretty. He does his best to clean it first before he starts to wrap the bandages around his foot.
Gorou frowns. His gaze lingers on Aether's injury a little too long before he looks back up, ears drooping. ]
We should head back. If it weren't this deep of a wound, I'd give you the option to continue onward, but this doesn't look good. [ He offers Aether a gentle smile. ] I'll help you.
[Aether winces slightly as the wound is cleaned but he's grateful for Gorou's help. The other has always been so good to him. The foot is soon bandaged perfectly and Aether is tempted to give it a try to see if he can walk on his own.
That's when his companion speaks. In the end, the traveler doesn't move from his spot, continuing to sit down as he stares at his foot. It's true that he can't continue on like this. They need to head back.]
Right... I guess, we'll have to try again some other time.
[He sounds somewhat disappointed. He wanted to spent the day with Gorou but instead he caused him trouble.
...Suddenly, an idea pops in his mind.]
Once we go back, do you think you could stay with me? I think I'll be stuck in bed for some time so it would be nice to have some company.
[ Gorou doesn't mind. He's been finding that any time he spends with Aether is time well-spent, though he does regret that Aether got injured in the process today. Still, he reaches around to put his arm around his friend's shoulders so Aether can sturdy himself, and he answers the question immediately. ]
Of course. I have some spare time after this, so I can keep you company for a while.
[ What unfolds in front of Noé's eyes is nothing like what he has seen so far. Everything seems so unfamiliar and strange, especially the surroundings. The vampire forces himself to pay close attention to Aether and the people with him. There's no doubt about the girl's identity, yet there's no telling who the other person is.
When they speak up, the weight of their words leaves Noé anxious about what is going to happen next. He's standing just behind the twins, close enough to reach for Aether. From that place, Noé can see that kind smile, even if the sounds coming from the outside sound rather ominous.
The scenery changes in a blink of an eye. At first, Noé finds himself overwhelmed—there are so many images of different places that he can't keep up.
When he opens his eyes again, he's back in the room, the taste of Aether's blood fresh on his tongue. He's still holding his hand while his gaze is fixed on the traveler. ]
I...I'll try again.
[ Even if Noé can't really control for how long he can read someone's memories, being brought back so abruptly leaves him a little flustered. ]
[His heart is beating faster, yet he soon realizes it's not fear that he's feeling, but something else entirely. His hand is still in Noé's and the traveler waits for what is going to happen next.
His companion suddenly opens his eyes, seeming somewhat out of it as he looks at Aether. The boy blinks, before leaning closer. There's worry in his gaze.]
Are you... sure? I... I don't mind if you want to try again. [He really doesn't, it's just that his heart can't calm down in his chest. It continues to beat madly and Aether fights an urge to just grab Noé's hand and hold it.
Is this some kind of after effect from vampire bite?]
I'm okay, don't worry. I just... want to know more about you.
[ At that moment, Noé realizes that helping Aether find his sister wasn't the only reason why he suggested drinking his blood. His natural curiosity aside, Noé is genuinely interested in Aether as a person—he wants to know what makes him happy, what things he find annoying, what saddens him.
There's no telling what the future holds, but Noé's drive to learn more about Aether's past and his present self is something that he hasn't questioned up until now. Why exactly does he want to know so much about Aether?
Is it really about just helping him? It seems like there's much more to it. ]
How are you feeling, though? I didn't drink too much, did I?
[ For a moment there, he got caught up in his own selfishness, which feels embarrassing. ]
[Watching Noé, Aether really isn't sure what to think. There have been a few people who wished to get to know the traveler, but none of them had an ability to dig for his past like this. And yet, it feels like it's more than just pure curiosity.
His heart beats faster again and Aether finally lets his hand move to gently grasp Noé's.]
I'm fine. A couple of drops of blood is nothing, really.
[He smiles softly, wanting to reassure the other. It was more than just "a couple of drops" but Aether won't say that out loud. He leans closer to Noé, as if wanting him to discard whatever embarrassment he's feeling for his actions. Aether agreed to this, so it's fine.]
[ Noé gazes down at the two punctures on Aether's wrist where his fangs damaged the skin. It feels a little bad that he didn't manage to learn much during the first time. ]
Alright... I just saw you, your twin sister, and... someone else. But I'll try again, I want to know more.
[ Aether is so close that he almost forgets to breathe for a moment. Honestly, it's hard to focus when his heart is thumping his chest like that, but Noé knows that giving up now would be just no good. ]
I'll treat you to some desserts after this, okay? Just bear with me.
[ His lips brush over the wound, even though it won't help with the pain, Noé wants to alleviate it somehow. Trying to be as delicate as possible, the vampire sinks his fangs into Aether's vein. Rather than marveling at the taste, Noé tries to focus on reading his memories, so he won't have to drink too much of the traveler's blood. ]
[With Gorou's support, Aether manages to stand up and they're up and ready to head back. The quick response for the general makes the traveler happy, but upon noticing the wagging of the other's tail, Aether can't help himself. He grins, saying:]
Once we're back... can I touch your tail? I'm sure that would help me recover.
[It would not, but who can blame him for trying?
His tone is light, showing that he's mostly joking. He doesn't want to force Gorou. At the same time Aether can't help but wonder how soft that tail is.]
[Aether isn't sure who that "someone else" may be. What moment exactly Noé saw? Was it one of the many worlds the traveler had visited with his sister? Or was it something else? Regardless of what it was, Aether nods, then lets his head rest gently against the other's shoulder.]
You don't have to buy me anything... [He says with a soft smile. His heart is beating fast and he finds himself longing for the warmth that radiates from Noé. Is blood loss at fault here?] Go on.
[The brush of lips against the wound catches him completely off guard. Aether breathes in sharply, his skin is tingling. Slowly he's starting to understand what is happening with him... but he doesn't get enough time to process it as teeth sink into his wrist again.
This time it doesn't hurt as much but again, Aether fails to comprehend why. His head presses a little more to Noé, unconsciously seeking his closeness.
Meanwhile, a new memory will show for the vampire. It's Lumine again, but she's yelling for Aether to wake up. They're in some sort of interior, everything is crumbling apart, there's fire and some sort of black mass of energy swirling around. The traveler blinks at his sister, then looks around alarmed.
Lumine? What is going on?
She grabs him by the hand and drags him towards the exit.
We have to leave! Now! It's not safe here!
He doesn't ask more questions. It's just another failed attempt at trying to find a real "home". This time it seems they're stuck in a world that is about to meet its end. But there's something more to his sister's expression, something that Aether himself doesn't seem to notice as they're trying to flee.
She's tormented, her eyes are on the verge of tears. She glances at the ruins, the destruction and the look in her eyes is similar to that when she had to leave their first home, their real home.
The twins run, but they're soon stopped by a god and then separated by that god's immense power. Aether can do nothing before he falls into endless sleep, full of nightmares, where he sees the world destruction and losing his sister over and over again.]
[ It's overwhelming to say the least—all these feelings are temporarily Noé's as well. Even the ones that are hidden deep inside of Aether's heart, the ones whose existence he might not have realized. The scene unfolding in front of his eyes is a lot, but he keeps thinking of Aether and how long he's been looking for his sister.
Even now, it's so easy to recall his sheepish smile when Noé offered to read his memories. The traveler never wants to bother anyone and keeps things to himself. If he only could be the person who could help Aether...
It's tough to look at these nightmares, even if most of these sights aren't really comprehensible to the vampire. Maybe there is some kind of a hint there—for that reason alone, Noé can't back down. ]
Aether...
[ His voice won't reach the sleeping traveler. The images keep flashing in front of Noé's eyes until he loses his focus and opens his eyes to find himself in the room with Aether, the taste of the other's blood still fresh on his tongue. ]
Aether...
[ He says again, his voice feeling a little foreign, before pulling the traveler into an embrace. ]
[Aether is unaware of anything, head still resting on Noé's shoulder, eyes closed. He opens them only when he notices that things may not be going well, that maybe he shouldn't have agreed to any of this. Then, he's suddenly pulled into a hug, close, with Noé's voice ringing in his ear.
Aether is silent, eyes wide for a while, before he closes them, his head again leaning against the other's shoulder.]
I... I don't know what you've seen but don't worry. I'm fine. It's fine. Everything is fine.
[His voice is soft and steady, his hands come up to trace comforting patterns into the other's back.
Aether should've never agreed to this. His memories will likely now burden Noé and there will be nothing gained from this. The traveler does not belong to this world and thus the people who live here are better off not knowing about countless worlds, the destruction and the lonely journey of two stars.
